Jazmine Sullivan x Waajeed “Without You” (unreleased)

Image

Been a minute since I was able to post a Waajeed jem, but here’s a tasty little remix that Jeed did for Jazmine Sullivan as a demo cut preceding the release of her debut album Fearless in 2008.

Jeed states…

I recorded this on a weekend lockout with Jazmine Sullivan a few years back. After a meeting with her A&R Peter Edge of Interscope Records, they were looking for a signature sound for her first project (which later became, “Fearless”). I was playing some beats and she stopped me when I played this one. It was a replay of a sample I’d gotten from Jake One  while at a Red Bull Music Academy retreat.

This has been floating about the internet since I played it on DJ Jamad’s Afromentals Mixshow in April of 2008, but I thought you’d like to hear a crispier copy – featuring some additional keys from  Simon Katz from Jamiroquai.

Always love posting the goodness from one of my favourite producers out there.

Corinne Bailey Rae vs. Mara Hruby “Is This Love” (Bob Marley covers)

Strangely enough, these two songs both landed in my in-box over the past month, both interpretations of the Bob Marley classic “Is this Love”.

Corinne Baily Rae’s cover from her Valnetine’s Day scheduled The Love EP, featuring covers of originals by Prince “I Want To Be Your Lover”, Paul McCartny “My Love”, Sly & The Family Stone/Doris Day “Que Sera Sera”, and of course Bob Marley’s classic…

Mara Hruby, a fresh new face out of San Francisco, just released her debut EP From Her Eyes, also a selections of re-workings of some of her personal favorites. Including covers of SteroLab “Lose Myself”, Van Hunt “Character”, Mos Def “Panties”, and Andre 3000 “Take Off Your Cool”.

…and an extra treat, the brand new video for Mara Hruby “Is This Love” directed by Slick Jackson and shot in beautiful NYC.

Melanie Fiona “Gone and Never Coming Back”

Here’s some new Melanie Fiona for ya’ll. While this ballad isn’t bad, I’m really hoping that this isn’t a transfer from the diverse Melanie Fiona of her first album, to the always dangerous ballad, adult contemporary pit that many a favorite R&B/soul chanteuse has fallen in to. This usually comes on record 2 or 3, so just crossing my fingers that this is only one flavour being offered on the new record. Melanie’s sophomore album The MF Life will be released later in 2011.

Bilal “Levels” EP | Flying Lotus Edit

Bilal and Plug Research are kicking off the year with some new treats, an EP of remixes of album track “Levels” remixed by the likes of Flying Lotus, Sonnymoon, and KenBts.

The Fly Lo edit is a great new version of this emotional track from Bilal, bringing more of a live jazz feel to the track. Lotus kills it.

Again, this isn’t the Bilal of simply “Soul Sista” vibes, but the more adventurous Bilal venturing in to more diverse sounds and environments in his music.

The EP will be released for online purchase/download on Monday, January 24.
